April Caddel

Student C’11, Spelman College

Born in Opelika, Alabama to Harvey Columbus Caddell, Jr. and Margaret Lynn Holt Caddell, April Amanda Caddell was raised in Tuskegee, Alabama. As a proud Tuskegee native, April has volunteered at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site since her freshman year of high school. She is also a member of 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement based out of Selma, Alabama, which focuses on developing community-conscious leaders. Through this organization, she has been exposed to passionate leadership from the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements.

Since her first year at Spelman, she has volunteered with various organizations, including the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, The Study Hall @Emmaus House, Jumpstart Atlanta @Morehouse College, KIPP Strive Academy, ForeverFamily Atlanta, and the FAST Program of Families First. She also participated in the Shepherd Poverty Alliance Program the summer before her junior year. She is a member of the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key Honor Society, Children and their Families Excel (CAFÉ) Service Community, Morehouse Entrepreneurial Network, and the Spelman Independent Scholars Oral History Project. She is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. through the “Beautiful” Beta Iota Chapter of Spelman College and a two-time recipient of the Highest GPA of a Zeta Undergraduate in the State of Georgia. Presently, she serves as a Peer Tutor in the Comprehensive Writing Lab of Spelman College and as Junior Class Representative for the Bonner Scholars Program. April is a Comparative Women’s Studies major with a concentration of Representations throughout the Diaspora. As a Comparative Women’s Studies major, she participates in various activities held by the Women’s Research and Resource Center. Her hobbies and interests Black feminist thought and theory, Black women’s biography and autobiography, and learning foreign languages. Currently she studies French and Spanish, and desires to learn Japanese and Portuguese. Upon graduation from Spelman College, April plans to attain a dual master’s degree in Library Science and History in order to become an archivist with a focus on oral narratives. Her most recent victory includes being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and becoming a vocalist of the Spelman College Jazz Ensemble.
